We Pennsylvania's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Harrisburg rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Harrisburg pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
  • Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
  • Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
  • Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
  • When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires

Harrisburg Rodent Removal Tip:

Reasons why relocated rats don't survive out of their usual territory
Relocating rats may seem like a very humane thing to do after catching them, but in reality, it is actually the opposite. Rats have no chance of surviving outside their territory, and the reasons will be discussed below.

Rats are not good at adapting to new or different territories; all their lives, rats live in the territory they are born in. They learn about their territory and know about the location of food and water sources. After learning all these, a rat will be used to these particular places as its food and water source. Rats are intelligent creatures, but this mechanism is limiting because it takes time for them to learn about a particular environment, and a lot of errors are involved. Also, rats suffer from neophobia, which is the fear of new, unknown, or unfamiliar things. Releasing a rat into a territory that it is not familiar with triggers its neophobia, and it could suffer and die from the side effects. The rat could die of starvation outside its territory since it doesn't know the location of food and water sources.

rodent trapping Due to the presence of predators, like cats, snakes, birds, among many others, the rat has a lower chance of survival. Rats are very timid and fearful animals, especially one that has been living comfortably in your home that is secured with an abundance of food. In a new environment, the rat wouldn't know the territories of its predators and also would not know parts of the territory that offers protection, lowering its chances of survival. Rats are a delicacy among some predators, and without the knowledge of the territory of their predators, the rats end up being prey. And sadly, we have no control over this since we also don't know where the predators are located and where they aren't located and what parts of the environment offer protection for the rat.

Competition is another factor that affects the rate of survival for the rat in a different environment. This is because rats live together in a large group, and the rats are competitive among themselves because the ones that get the most food have a higher chance to be able to reproduce. Let's say you release the rat into the streets; street rats are very competitive and violent. These groups of rats survive purely by dominance; only the strongest survive. So the rat that has been sharing your home with you and living the easy life will not be able to keep up with the competition. The rat might get so traumatized that it would die of self-starvation

The truth is that it is almost impossible for a rat to survive outside its territory. Even if none of the scenarios mentioned in all the preceding paragraphs occur, the rat will die within a period of time from other factors. Maybe it finds its way back to another human's home and gets killed. Or maybe it couldn't keep up with the street life and gets killed during a street fight. Or maybe, just maybe, it was able to learn about its new environment, and it is now among the groups of rats in that area. You don't have to feel guilty for all the negative and unalterable outcomes. There's basically nothing you can do about it because none of these outcomes are within your control. Here is some advice, you can kill the rat immediately after it is caught to prevent it from suffering and dying inhumanely. If you cannot kill the rat willingly, you can contact professionals to do it.
